Torque Drift 2 adds new iconic Nissan, Toyota, Honda car models in major update; integrates with Motorverse
With 45 million downloads globally, the Torque Motorsport franchise gets its biggest update yet, including new game mode, iconic cars, enhanced modding tools, multiplayer leaderboards, and integration with Motorverse to expand interoperability
28 May 2024 - Game studio Grease Monkey Games (GMG), a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, has deployed the official 0.9 update for its premier drift racing simulator Torque Drift 2 (TD2), available for PC on the Epic Games Store. The update introduces a new in-game virtual currency, freestyle mode, multiplayer leaderboards, in-game shop, new cars featuring authentic IP, modding tools, and several other improvements, fixes, and optimizations. TD2 has also officially joined Motorverse, the global digital ecosystem backed by Animoca Brands. Motorverse champions digital vehicle ownership and culture and pioneers automotive IP and brand collaborations in various motorsport-centric games.
Building on the success of its previous hit motorsport games Torque Burnout and Torque Drift, which boast a combined 45 million downloads worldwide, the studio is focused on further developing its latest major project: Torque Drift 2.
As part of the version 0.9 update, GMG has added a slew of brand-new cars to Torque Drift 2, including the Nissan R33, Toyota Chaser JZX100, Toyota MK4 Supra, Honda S2000, and Honda Civic Type R. These join the several models already added to the game in previous updates, which include the Nissan R34, Nissan R35, Mazda RX7, Mazda MX5, Nissan 370z, and others.
Version 0.9 is the biggest update yet to Torque Drift 2 and introduces several highly anticipated features, including the new game mode “Freestyle” — the first of many new game modes that will be added over the course of the next 12 months. The Freestyle game mode allows players to test their driving skills by drifting through as many clipping points as possible before time runs out. To improve their score, racers must master drifts, close calls, wall taps, and transitions. With Beginner, Intermediate, and Pro circuits, players of all skill levels will find an appropriate challenge.
Another new addition to the game is multiplayer leaderboards, which let players compete against friends and other drifters around the world for the highest score. Leaderboards are reset weekly, offering users frequent opportunities to top the charts and win rewards, which now include the REVV token, the central utility and governance token for the Motorverse ecosystem, and a new virtual in-game currency called Torque Funds (ToFu). By showing off their skills in the Freestyle mode or by reaching the top 3 ranks in the weekly leaderboards, the top drivers can earn free REVV and ToFu and spend them in the shop to buy new standard or limited-edition cars and parts.
Grease Monkey Games has also revamped Torque Drift 2’s in-game shop to make it easier than ever for players to find and buy what they need without digging through their entire garage inventories.
“This update is a massive step toward finalizing the core systems that we've been building together with the Torque Drift 2 community over the past few months, and we are excited to offer players so many fresh and exciting features,” said Arran Potter, CEO of Grease Monkey Games. “From the new Freestyle mode and multiplayer leaderboards to the shop revamp and the introduction of ToFu and REVV, we are continuing our mission to provide the most realistic and engaging drifting experience possible.”
The 0.9 update also introduces various other features, including a slick new road tool that simplifies track creation, an enhanced road feel for players using simulator rigs, a new custom road tool for the TD2 ModKit, fixes and optimizations to ensure better performance, and many other fixes and improvements.
Integration with Motorverse
Torque Drift 2 has officially joined Motorverse, and the 0.9 update also added support for the REVV token, which can be used to purchase various in-game assets such as cars, parts, tracks, and services across multiple games within the Motorverse ecosystem.
Following the 0.9 update, REVV has been added to Torque Drift 2’s currency bar, allowing the game to check players’ wallets and display their token balances in the UI. Players can now use REVV tokens to purchase Limited Edition NFT items with a 30% discount in TD2 to celebrate the occasion. Players can also earn weekly REVV rewards by reaching the top ranks on the newly launched leaderboards.
The REVV token, which unlike traditional game currencies is truly owned by holders, enables anyone to become a fully-fledged ecosystem participant and partner rather than a mere player or customer. At the same time, the larger the Motorverse ecosystem becomes through interoperability and IP partnerships, the more REVV will be used, creating a positive feedback loop for the developers and a snowball effect of utility for the avid gamers.
“With the addition of REVV and further integration into Motorverse, Torque Drift 2 continues our shared mission to create the most expansive, immersive, and interconnected ecosystem for all motorsports fans across the world,” said Will Griffiths, vice president of commercial strategy at Animoca Brands and general manager of Motorverse. “Thanks to digital property rights, true interoperability, and a healthy economy, Motorverse invites players to join a thriving community and enjoy unique experiences, and Torque Drift 2 is a perfect example of this vision.”
“Support for REVV is one of the game’s largest updates so far, and we are delighted to offer motorsports fans these exciting new features and access to Motorverse’s unified economy,” said Arran Potter, CEO of Grease Monkey Games. “In line with the overarching vision of a fully interoperable racing-centric ecosystem, Torque Drift 2 players can now purchase or earn REVV tokens directly within the game to seamlessly utilize them across all Motorverse titles.”
Since its initial release in Early Access in October 2023, Torque Drift 2 has been downloaded by more than 380,000 players, setting up a vibrant ecosystem for motorsports fans and enthusiasts. The game offers extensive profile and garage customization options, realistic car physics, and performance tuning for PC peripherals including mouse and keyboard, game controllers and simulator rigs. With a powerful suite of user-generated content creation tools and both single- and multiplayer experiences, Torque Drift 2 provides a “play-your-way” experience.
Through Torque Drift 2’s numerous licensed partnerships, some of the world’s most prominent motorsport organizations and car and part manufacturers are already represented in the game, including Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Formula DRIFT, Konig, Mishimoto, and others, with more to be added in the near future.
